Facial hair is an issue that many women prefer to keep quiet, with furtive trips to the beauty salon or secret bleaching sessions at home. While all women have fine, light hair covering their faces and bodies, for some women this hair can be thicker, coarser and more visible — but why? We spoke to dermatologist Dr Stefanie Williams at the launch of the Philips Lumea , where she told us that there are a variety of factors behind female facial hair. Shaving, waxing and threading are relatively cheap and quick ways to remove the hair, although of course, they require regular maintenance. Or you could keep a pair of tweezers on hand to get rid of little unwanted hairs.
Why it's a terrible idea for women to shave their faces
This is why some women get hair on their faces
T o shave or not to shave? Absolutely not. Does any woman in the 21st century truly have the time or the inclination to shave her entire face for the sake of slightly softer skin? In a world that chastises any hint of facial hair in women, having it can be distressing psychologically, which is why some women in particular, those with polcystic ovary syndrome , which causes hirsutism already resort to shaving their faces. The use of oral contraceptives to lower the androgen production can help, and creams such as Vaniqa slow down the rate of hair regrowth. Skin tone also makes a difference to how much facial hair is visible.
Race, rather than skin pigmentation, predicts facial hair growth in women
Ah, chin hair. Most people - that's both men and women - will grow the occasional unexpected strand in all kinds of areas on their body without it becoming a cause for concern. It's totally normal. This can involve a single or multiple areas, such as moustache and beard area, chest, lower abdomen, back and inner thighs," explains Elizabeth May, an expert from the Private Skin Laser Clinic in Hampstead.
Due to these differences, hair does not grow in the same way or at the same speed in people of different ethnic origins. Asian hair is usually straight and either dark brown or black in color. It grows perpendicularly to the scalp. This hair type has the fastest growth rate at approximately 1.
